I wouldn't do this project with high school students as paper mache is a bit too juvenile for them, but this could be adapted into a sculptural project with clay as well. I asked them to merge two animals OR an animal with an object. They had to come up with several ideas in their sketchbook and we troubleshooted over which one would work best in 3D. They created an armature out of cardboard, newspaper, wire, and scotch tape. Then they covered their armature in standard paper mache fashion, with construction paper and paste. Final touches were added with acrylic paint and the entire thing was covered with a coat of glue-all as a sealant.
